A large yard can be intimidating to work with as I found out when landscaping 40 acres of nothing but grass! When working with a very large space such as acreage, it helps to draw out a plan on paper. Try to make it as close to scale as possible and play around with a few different layouts.
This visual helped me realize how small of an area I was previously planning. In the end I spread my original design out to use much more space. By doing this, as I stood back from my finished project, everything was proportionate to the size of yard and it looked like I had hired a professional.
Another great idea to keep in mind when landscaping large areas is to create smaller areas. You can do this simply by pretending there are invisible fences and adding items to those areas to separate the space. Here I used two chairs and a low wall (two cinder blocks and two landscaping poles) to make a "corner" not far from the house. I also cut the grass up to my "invisible fence line", giving the look of a smaller yard.
Winter can be a hard time for planting, to help keep your yard from looking boring, add some items with texture, shadowing or color to add fun and interest!
